  • The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has a web site that orients people to the full range of their work in research and education. There is also a link to K-12 education resources that includes a variety of interesting sites for those teaching about oceanography and the marine environment.
  • The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Marine Operations Page includes information on their research vessels, research projects, and specifics about the deep sea exploration projects underway. Included are links to the new R/V Atlantis, R/V Knorr, R/V Oceanus, the submersible Alvin, ROV Jason, and others.
  • The GLOBE Program links students and scientists in 104 countries as they collect data about their environment and enter it onto the GLOBE database.
  • New Bedford Whaling Museum – Located in Newbedford, this museum is dedicated to the Whaling Industry which flourished there.
  • WhaleNet is an international telecommunication project funded by the National Science Foundation and based at Wheelock College in Boston. WhaleNet's goal is to enhance science education by providing data to teachers and students that can be a source of interdisciplinary classroom activities. Features include whale watch data, satellite tags on marine mammals with daily location transmissions, and the ASK (Acquiring Scientific Knowledge) a Scientist program in which students pose questions of experts in the field.
  • The New England Aquarium in Boston offers a variety of programs and resources of interest to marine educators. Their page includes information on the Teacher Resource Center, curriculum activities, and a thorough orientation to the institution and its services.
  • The Sea Grant office at WHOI provides access to a variety of curriculum and resource materials and links to other Sea Grant programs around the country.
  • The Sea Grant College Program and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology site includes information on research, education, and technology projects. They have an ongoing listing of International Year of the Ocean events taking place in Massachusetts.
  • The Center For Coastal Studies provides information on their whale research and rescue programs and their many education offerings. Included is nice information on the whales of New England.
  • The Schooner Ernestina, based in New Bedford, offers a variety of educational programs both dockside and underway. Included are programs for elementary and secondary students, one-day teacher workshops, as well as a summer teacher training institute.
  • The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary site has a wealth of information on the sanctuary including images and videos of underwater research, education program descriptions, and curriculum activities.
  • DLESE (The Digital Library for Earth Systems Education) – This is a good source of information and resources for earth systems education.
  • Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence – New England – COSEE New England focuses on developing innovative ways to help ocean science researchers, informal science educators and K-12 educators offer high-quality opportunities in ocean science education throughout New England.
  • Classroom Encounters – This website offers original scientist-teacher-filmmaker teaching resources (on DVD) on climate and global change that feature top scientists in the global change field (hurricanes, biology, oceans, geology, climate change) and their interactions with ninth graders. Introductions to the scientist, teaching tips, student made films, power points, and art created by students for teachers is on the website.
  • Mass Environmental Education Society – This organization promotes environmental education in the state and in the region.
  • MITS Inc., (the Museum Institute for Teaching Science) – MITS promotes the teaching of participatory, inquiry-based, minds-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at the elementary and middle school levels (PreK-8), through collaboration among informal science education institutions.
  • Marine Studies Consortium – Marine Sciences Consortium – offers evening courses in aquatic science and environmental management that may can be taken for graduate and undergraduate credit at area colleges and universities, with credit applicable to teacher certification and continuing education requirements.
  • Turtle Journal – Turtle Journal explores the natural world of coastal ecosystems from uplands through estuaries to deep blue seas with the strategy to save the world one turtle at a time.
  • Earth’s Water – All About Oceans – Earth’s water is everywhere around us. Earth is covered up by about two-thirds of water in the form of oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds. This site is a link to dozens of sites dealing with the oceans.
  • Water World: A Guide to the Seven Seas – This website from England contains dozens of links to anything that you might think of as being connected with water.
